Low-carbon lighting for Oakwood Park
Oakwood Park in Derby, underwent a lighting upgrade aimed at improving safety while aligning with net zero goals.
Derby City Council partnered with TRT Lighting and Balfour Beatty to reduce embodied carbon, improve circularity, and lower energy consumption. The solution featured the installation of ‘Oaken’ lanterns—DarkSky International-approved, British-made fixtures crafted from sustainably sourced European oak and recycled materials. These warm-white 3000K lights minimise blue light and are designed for durability and recyclability.
The lighting design maintained necessary illumination for public safety, especially near play areas, while avoiding upward light to protect local wildlife and preserve dark skies.
The project achieved a significant reduction in embodied carbon and Oakwood Park now serves as a model for eco-conscious urban lighting that balances public use, ecological protection, and climate action.
