Light Pollution & Dark Skies
Light pollution, often overlooked, disrupts ecosystems, wildlife, human health, and energy efficiency while diminishing the beauty of the night sky. Its components—glare, sky glow, light trespass, and clutter—result from excessive and poorly directed artificial lighting. Addressing light pollution is vital as most urban and suburban areas are heavily affected. Fortunately, it is reversible. Solutions include adopting “Dark Sky” lighting, which focuses light downward and uses warmer Correlated Colour Temperatures (CCTs) of 3000K or less to reduce blue light pollution and its harmful impacts on flora, fauna, and night sky visibility. While warmer CCTs slightly increase energy costs, they support ecological health and improve the ambiance of outdoor spaces. Dark Sky certification, provided by the International Dark-Sky Association, ensures lighting meets strict standards. Success stories like Presteigne and Norton (1st Dark Sky Community in Wales & mainland England) demonstrates how communities can balance environmental stewardship with responsible lighting practices.

The F W Thorpe Plc Carbon Offsetting Project & Sustainable Forestry
(including Forest Tour at Cwm Fagor, Monmouthshire)
The F W Thorpe Plc Carbon Offsetting Project & Sustainable Forestry provides 2-3 hours of learning in respect of modern woodland creation and management. Participants will engage with the subject via a guided walk and the opportunity to plant several trees (dependent on time of year). The speaker will talk about the design and long-term planning required for woodland management on 50-100 year time horizons. The interactions between soil, tree species choice, topography, geology, climate and existing biodiversity set the canvas by which Chartered Foresters make business decisions and use markets and procurement to achieve positive environmental outcomes that protect biodiversity, generate income from timber/carbon and increase public engagement with the natural environment.
