Low Carbon Retrofit for Lincolnshire’s Lighting Network
Lincolnshire County Council is undertaking a large-scale retrofit programme to modernise its street lighting network, working in partnership with TRT Lighting and Balfour Beatty.
Rather than replacing thousands of lanterns, the Council is reusing existing housings and upgrading them with TRT-designed LED retrofit units. The approach supports a circular economy, extends asset life by up to 20 years, and has already achieved over 65% energy savings compared with a 2016 baseline.
Each retrofit has been engineered and tested at TRT’s UK manufacturing facility to ensure compliance with lighting performance, thermal efficiency, and lifetime expectations. Designed for fast, efficient rollout, every unit can be installed in under ten minutes on site, reducing disruption, waste, and labour costs.
This ongoing programme demonstrates how collaboration and sustainable design can deliver major carbon and cost reductions across one of England’s largest rural counties — without the need for full replacement.
