Background

As local authorities continue to expand public electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the need for flexible charging solutions has never been greater. Across Greater Manchester, significant investment is accelerating the rollout of on-street charging networks, while Trafford has committed to installing up to 100 new public charge points to make EV ownership more accessible for residents.

To support this programme, Amey was seeking a UK manufacturing partner capable of delivering a charging solution that could be adapted to suit a range of installation requirements, while providing the flexibility to adapt to changing operational requirements over time.

Solution

Working closely with Amey, TRT Lighting supplied its E-Via charging pillar, a modular platform designed to provide long-term flexibility without compromising reliability or ease of maintenance.

Rather than offering a single fixed specification, E-Via enabled each installation to be configured to suit its location, including a choice of single or twin charging sockets, 7.4kW or 22kW charging capability, RFID access or integrated payment terminals, together with flange or root mounting options.

A key advantage of the E-Via platform is that every configuration is housed within the  same robust enclosure. This means charging units can be upgraded or reconfigured in the future, whether increasing charging capacity, changing payment methods or incorporating additional  features, without replacing the entire unit. This modular approach helps accommodate changing operational requirements through future upgrades and reconfiguration.

Where required, E-Via  can also incorporate an integrated lighting module, providing additional illumination around the charging point to improve visibility and enhance the charging experience during hours of  darkness.

As part of the delivery process, TRT also worked alongside Joyce to ensure each charging unit was professionally branded for Amey prior to installation, providing a consistent identity across the rollout.

Outcome

The first phase of the Trafford rollout has seen more than 30 E-Via charging units installed, with further deployments planned as the programme continues.

The modular design provides Amey  with a robust charging platform that can be easily maintained and upgraded throughout its operational life, helping reduce whole-life costs while supporting future expansion of the charging  network. The flexibility built into each unit also allows changing operational requirements to be accommodated without replacing the complete charger.

High levels of charger usage across  Trafford demonstrate strong demand for the network and provide a solid foundation for future phases of the rollout.

By combining flexible specification options, upgradeability and UK manufacturing within a single platform, TRT Lighting has helped Amey deliver an EV charging solution designed to meet Trafford’s current requirements while remaining ready for tomorrow’s.

Our focus throughout the Trafford EV Network trial has been to provide accessible, affordable and easy-to-use infrastructure for residents, while ensuring the network can adapt as demand evolves. TRT worked closely with our delivery teams to support the programme, providing a flexible solution that could be configured to suit different locations and  operational requirements across the borough. This collaborative approach has helped create a strong foundation for Trafford’s growing public charging network and supports the council’s wider ambitions for electric vehicle adoption.
