Background
Lincolnshire County Council is undertaking an ongoing programme to modernise its street lighting infrastructure across one of England’s largest rural counties.
As part of this work, the council sought a more cost-effective alternative to its existing decorative street lighting stock, with the aim of improving energy efficiency while meeting the varied requirements of streets and public spaces.
Building on its established relationship with TRT Lighting, the council selected the manufacturer’s Circa LED luminaire for a countywide rollout.
Solution
TRT Lighting supplied its Circa 4 LED and Circa 8 LED luminaires for street and high street applications. Featuring a contemporary circular profile, Circa offered the council a different approach to decorative lighting, supported by modern LED technology.
Specified at 3000K, the luminaires provide warm white illumination while benefiting from Circa’s DarkSky International-approved design, which helps minimise upward light and unnecessary light pollution. This is particularly relevant in a county with rural landscapes and locations valued for stargazing.
Circa’s flexible control options also support Lincolnshire County Council’s established approach to managing street lighting. With part-night dimming capability and programmable power settings, the range can accommodate different operating schedules and lighting requirements, helping the council manage energy consumption across its network.
The range incorporates replaceable components, allowing key parts to be maintained or renewed without replacing the complete luminaire.
Outcome
Working with Lincolnshire County Council and Balfour Beatty, TRT Lighting has supported the replacement of 629 decorative streetlights across the county since 2025, with further installations continuing.
The introduction of Circa has delivered energy savings of approximately 25% compared with the previous LED retrofit equipment, while providing a more economical and reliable lighting solution suited to a variety of locations.
With replaceable components, Circa also offers the potential to reduce longer-term maintenance costs by allowing individual parts to be serviced or renewed without replacing the complete luminaire.
Managing a street lighting network across a county as large as Lincolnshire means making careful decisions about where we invest and how we get the best value from our assets. Not every location has the same requirements, so having different lighting options available is important. Our ongoing work with TRT Lighting allows us to explore practical solutions that meet those needs while making the best use of our budgets.
